Different Ways to Install DermSync

Service installation (DermSync-setup-service.msi)

  • DermSync will run as a service (Admin privileges required to set this up)
  • One installation per clinic
  • Setup is shared for computer
    • Settings folder is %PROGRAMDATA%.
  • User does not need to be logged into computer to run the service.  Before running service, user needs to be logged into computer for initial setup (database settings and DermEngine login)

Non-service Installation (DermSync-setup.msi)

  • Admin user not required
  • One installation per workstation
  • Option to install for all users or for a single user
  • Setup is done on each computer user
    • Settings folder is %APPDATA%
  • Requires user login into windows for initial setup and while transferring data to DermEngine (ie running DermSync requires a user to be logged in)

Note for terminal servers:  When DermSync is installed with the service installation the settings can be shared between all users.  Each user will run their own instance of DermSync.  For the terminal server, multiple users will have DermSync running at the same time, which may lead to increased CPU usage and slowness if there are many users.

It is possible to run DermSync service on a terminal server, but one alternative is to set up DermSync on a separate server.  For example, if there is a separate Database server and a separate App server, DermSync could be run on the App server as long as the App server has access to the Database server.
In case the terminal server is the only server, there is another alternative to
install the non-service installation on individual users instead of all users.
